A proof-of-work challenge asks a device to complete computation that a verifier can check. It can replace a manual image task with background work, changing who bears the effort and how that effort appears in the interface.

Work and verification

CAP’s guide describes a computational challenge implementation. Provider mechanisms differ, so avoid treating every background widget as the same protocol merely because neither asks visitors to select pictures.

Keep the two roles distinct

The client obtains and solves a challenge. The server verifies submitted evidence according to the provider’s rules. A client-side completion tick is not enough to authorize the protected application action.

The application still owns account access, business eligibility, and resource controls. Computation does not establish who a person is, whether they own a card, or whether a message is welcome.

Understand where the cost moves

An image challenge consumes attention and interaction. Background work consumes device time and resources, along with initialization and network costs. Older devices, constrained browsers, and background scheduling can affect the experience.

A useful evaluation includes completion distributions and recovery rather than only a fast result on a developer workstation. Record what the visitor sees during a wait and whether they can recover if the work needs restarting.

Test the policy and the interface

Exercise invalid evidence, expired or consumed results where the protocol defines them, missing configuration, and provider failure. Keep enforcement on the server. Separately test focus, labels, progress feedback, and recovery on the complete form.

The proof-of-work insights article explores device tradeoffs, fail-closed behavior covers unavailable verification, and accessibility review shows why replacing images does not automatically fix the surrounding interaction.

Frequently asked questions

What does proof of work ask a visitor's device to do?

It asks the device to perform computational work and return evidence that a verifier can check before allowing an operation.

Does proof of work establish a visitor's identity?

No. It demonstrates work under the verification scheme, not account ownership or permission to perform the requested action.
