Registration abuse
How to reduce automated fake-account creation
Review registration, verification, activation, and downstream benefits together so unwanted account creation cannot move to a weaker alternate path.

Fake accounts can be used for unwanted messages, promotion abuse, or manipulating application features. The harm is not always the record being created; it may be a benefit or permission the account immediately receives. OWASP’s account-creation threat definition identifies automated creation for later misuse.
Registration abuse
Map the whole lifecycle from registration to the first valuable action. If the application grants expensive capabilities immediately, the registration policy must be evaluated alongside those grants.
Cover every creation route
Include browser signup, public APIs, mobile clients, invitation acceptance, and older endpoints. A challenge displayed on one form should not be the only route where verification is enforced. Validate required fields and permissions on the server.
Keep verification and account eligibility distinct. A passed challenge does not establish that an email address belongs to a person or that they qualify for a promotion. Apply each business rule at the appropriate step.
Limit cost before granting benefits
Review the volume of confirmation messages, trial allocation, and other resources generated by signup. Use measured limits and progressive permissions suitable for the application rather than only a count of page visits.
Preserve a route for genuine users who share networks or use assistive technology. Overly broad blocking can reduce both abuse and useful registrations, making a simple decrease in signup volume look better than it is.
Test recovery and final use
Exercise a missing proof, failed verification, a retry after expiration, and an interrupted registration response. Check whether duplicate local retries create extra account attempts or confirmation messages.
Measure unwanted downstream activity separately from registration completion. Keep useful aggregate evidence without putting passwords or entire signup bodies in analytics. See form abuse, account-existence leakage, and fail-closed verification for the surrounding controls.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decide which registrations count as abuse?
Define the harmful use, such as spam or promotion misuse, and measure it after registration. Account creation alone is not an abuse outcome.
Can registration CAPTCHA prove a new account is legitimate?
No. Account eligibility and subsequent behavior require their own checks. Keep verification as one stage of the registration flow.
Can I try easycaptcha browser assistance for free?
Yes. Install the Chromium extension and activate its free plan for 25 recognitions a day, without an account or credit. Larger or multi-round challenges can use multiple recognition groups.
